So, I've been collecting books on trees, herbs, nature survival/cooking and the like for a few years now. It's fascinating how many angles you can approach even just the British plant lore from. Some of these books have purely religious or historical outlooks, others concentrate on modern survival, nature and community preservation and the like. I love reading them and linking all the avenues of study (also possibly preparing for a food industry dystopia where our invaried diets of monogenetic crops take a knock when the few mass-produced breeds of crops can no longer keep up with the evolution of blight and parasites and I will have to forage for my supper in the park next door >_>).

I can't work much or any of what I've learned into the stories I am currently writing. Not even my HP/Airbender survival fic because Harry is pretty ignorant of anything that doesn't grow in an English suburban garden or get chucked in a cauldron (I wish there was more herbology in the books, rather than made up or mutated plants). I'm trying to work some stuff into the background as Harry stumbles about, but then I start thinking about how vastly different the flora could be in the Avatar world, considering that the fauna is seven shades of screwed up.

So yeah, wrote 700 words of aforementioned fic and am working it into the 1200 words of that chapter I have so far. Previous chapter needs another scene because it's too short and choppy. I really love being able to go back and edit shit I've not put online yet. *GuiltGuiltGuilt* ^^;;

Status update on A Reason to Live: I'm working on a serious overhaul. The funny thing is very little of the published story will be affected. Desperately want to rewrite the (wangsty as hell) prologue but other than that, I'm just shuffling my headcanon. I'm working on the next chapter and once that's up I'll go back and edit existing chapters. Not much change but hopefully it'll be the kick-start I need to get the ball rolling again. That being said, I'm not making any promises.

Wizarding world plants always baffled me too. Maybe the Herbologists who bred them were stoned or something. I'm not sure, but there are only so many explanations one can think of for each more wildly weird plant before it starts becoming a more prominent thought.

Editing is awesome.

I always thought it was because magic mutated normal plants (and we all know magic defies all laws and common sense), either from spell build-up or simply because they only grow in magical areas like over ley lines. Otherwise, the wizarding world wouldn't be able to hide them all or wipe all the minds of the muggles who encountered them- these plants must only exist in areas muggle cannot go or their access can be restricted. But yeah, it would be nice to see them using purely medicinal herbs and things.

Ooooh, I never considered herbologist breeding new species of plants, maybe the ancient wizards did, the modern ones don't seem to innovate anything these days (hey, there's always Neville~ :D)

Well, the magical plants have to be somehow diffucult to cultivate or be restricted, just due to the nature of invasive plants. There's probably a fic in there somewhere. Maybe something about an underpaid Ministry department not getting all of some escaped plant and how the plant takes over Britain? Then Neville can save them all!

I'm sure at some point or another there were herbologist who cultivated certain plants into something new. Or maybe created fully out of magic, like Devil's Snare.

Where is this HP/Airbender survival fic? I'll love to read it. I gotta admit, I like crossovers...

*Rubs back of head sheepishly*

Well, I'm currently writing it and I've got about 1/4 of chapter four written, three chapters before that now almost edited to completion. I'm planning to hold the story back until I have more of it complete since I really don't want it to go the way of ARtL and have people waiting on a chapter for years. ^^;

Good news is I've been in the mood for writing it lately and stellawind (she posted just above you) has been giving me feedback, that is always a big boost.

I honestly don't know when I will start publishing it, or any of my WIPs, but it's always nice to hear someone is waiting for one.

Well, whenever you do post it, I'll love to read it. The notes I read about it in livejournal seem interesting. (Sighs. You don't mind at all that I'm reading most of your posts right? Makes me feel all stalkerish. But well, it's unusual to find someone who likes the same kind of fics I do and that writes so well. So I'm officially your fan. I look forward to reading more of your posts. *Cheers you on*)
